Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS)
Self-directed Online Course

In partnership with the Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), NATCO is now offering a self-directed Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) course which provides a relaxed learning experience with access to the same didactic sessions found in the live version of the Sixth Edition FCCS course. Learn at your own pace from the comfort and convenience of your home or office and then assess your knowledge through the use of pre- and post-tests.

The Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) course prepares non-intensivists to manage critically ill patients for the first 24 hours until transfer or appropriate critical care consultation can be arranged.

  • Requirements for successful course completion: attend all didactic sessions, and achieve a score of 70% or higher on the posttest

At the completion of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Prioritize assessment needs for the critically ill patient.
  • Select appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • Identify and respond to significant changes in the unstable patient.
  • Recognize and initiate management of acute life-threatening conditions.
  • Determine the need for expert consultation and/or patient transfer and prepare the practitioner for optimally accomplishing transfer.

Participation in, or completion of, this course does not confer any credential, nor does it satisfy any board certification requirement apart from the continuing education credit offered for it. This course is not intended to replace, override, or conflict with any licensing or credentialing requirements.

Online Licensed Course 
Online lectures were prepared by leaders in critical care and are delivered by professional presenters. Using a state-of-the-art online learning management system, participants can complete the lecture portion of the course over four weeks. Pre- and posttests assure mastery of the educational content. The course may be completed over a longer time period to accommodate an individual’s work schedule.  Participants who successfully complete of the online licensed course will receive a certificate of completion. In addition, those learners will receive 6.5 continuing education (CE)/continuing medical education (CME) from SCCM for their completion of the lecture portion of the program.

Nurses: This program has been approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (No. 8181), for up to 6.5 contact hours.

CEPTC:  This program has been approved by the American Board for Transplant Certification for 6.5 Category I credits.

Target Audience

The FCCS Course is designed to disseminate the basic critical care concepts to all professionals who may be called upon to care for the critically ill.


Type of Activity

This activity will focus on increasing knowledge of the first 24 hours of care, and applying this knowledge to practice settings.


The FCCS textbook is an integral part of the FCCS learning experience. Upon registration for the course, the book will be shipped.


The online portion of the course may be completed as a stand-alone course and does not require the completion of the skill stations.  Credit for the online portion of the course will be awarded based on the completion of the online course separate and apart from participation in the skill stations.

Online Course Fee:  $195 NATCO Members,  $250 Non-Members

The live version of the FCCS course typically includes related skill stations that supplement the 16 didactic lectures. NATCO will offer the skill stations in conjunction with an Advanced Donor Management Workshop April 5-7, 2018. This online FCCS Course will be a pre-requisite to attending the Advanced Donor Management Workshop.
